Wood projects?

Question by thinkGREEN: Wood projects?
Ok, I want to start making wood projects, and I am just a beginner with a little experience. What are some things to build to make me a better carpenter? I want to build a boat in a few years, so experience would help.
Thanks.

  2. Virtually any woodworking project will help you gain experience. I'd recommend going to your local library and taking out a couple of books of beginner projects and starting there. You need special tools to build boats and there's no sense in laying out the money for them without knowing if it's something you'd really want to try. As you build projects and increase your tool collection, you'll become more advanced.
Here's a couple links to online plans (most free)

You should also look up, either online or from books, beginner woodworking tips (the above sites have links to many of those also)

Good luck and welcome to the world of woodworking (or dust making as my Mother calls it ;-)

  3. Find a book in the library with a pattern for a workbench and build yourself a nice bench. You'll need one anyway if your are going to start woodworking as a serious hobby. Be sure to put shelves underneath to store tools (measure your tools first so that you get them the right size) and add things like drawers and a vise. By the time you are done you will have an bench and better skills. Have fun too.
