Unitarian Universalists...?

Question by Rétttrúnaðar strákur: Unitarian Universalists...?
to UU's. does the UU church actually TEACH anything? I mean, to they teach firm doctrine? I watched a video about the UU church, and must admit I'm very confused. if you accept all faiths, why do you call yourself a "church" and not a mosque, meeting house or kingdom hall? when people sing hymns, who do they sing too? if you try to cater to atheists, are they just singing to the atoms in the air?

If someone could explain what this Church is about, I'd say thanks! I know they preach acceptance, but what does the pastor preach every subday? does he actually TEACH anything?

UU churches teach deism,(belief in God as a creator but not in a particular book of text) basically. They don't "cater to atheists", their starting point is that there is a God.

I'm atheist, but my oldest son who is 19 is deist. I've been to his UU church with him a few times. It was a nice experience. As for hymns, yes...they sang some of the common ones "Our God is Most High" and "How Great is our God". Their hymns and prayers center more on the deity than on Jesus or any other religious figure.

The Pastor sermons the two times I went centered on moral truths more than anything else. Treating others with respect, and compassion and so forth but didn't rely on a scriptural text.

  1. No they don't. They're basically somewhat more structured Quakers.

  2. Quakers that sing.

Sometimes people who lose faith still miss the community and support of a religious and moral group.

I gather that Tim Berners-Lee is like this, and he wanted some moral teaching for his children.

    He became a Unitarian.

Other famous Unitarians of the Past are: Dickens, Newton, Nightingale, Darwin family, Mrs Gaskell, the musicians Grieg, Bartok and Adrian Boult etc etc.
